2010 IFAI Award

For more than 6 decades, the IFAI International Achievement Awards have recognized excellence in design and innovation, highlighting spectacular work in the specialty fabrics industry. This year, entrants competed in 29 categories, and IFAI received 383 entries from 13 countries. Entries were judged by industry experts, editors, architects, educators, and design professionals selected for their knowledge in a particular field of study or product area. Winners were selected based on complexity, design, workmanship, uniqueness, and function.

The award-winning project in Greenwich, Connecticut comprises 41 retractable window awnings, plus one 20-foot interior rectractable awning. All of the awnings are tied into the house’s Lutron electric system, and they can be operated all at once or in sections of four at a time.

The project’s purpose was to provide shade for the windows as well as provide a unique look for the house. The interior retractable awning was designed to provide shade for the glass-roofed solarium. The retractable awning was also hung upside down so no hardware was visible.
